Arcanys Early Learning Foundation: parent coaching program proven effective
Arcanys is committed to the Cebu community and has setup an official Foundation to pursue an early math learning program. The mission of the Arcanys Early Learning Foundation is to help parents of preschoolers to be the first teachers of their children, by supporting them with free educational activities and early learning methods and tools.
The Foundation is focused on teaching – playfully but efficiently – the first steps in mathematics to children 3 to 5 years old in disadvantaged areas of Cebu City (Philippines), with the active support of their parents. The Arcanys Early Learning Foundation is currently employing 10 pre-school teachers who are doing free math coaching at home, with involvement of parents and children, in the district (barangay) of Ermita in Cebu City, Philippines and from June 2012 to January 2013, more than 200 families completed a 3 months math training. So far, we have given already more than 10,000 math classes in the past year and changed the future of 500 families.
We believe that anything we do must be conducted with the highest standards, and confident with our methodology, we asked for a research study to be conducted on our action.
Today, we are proud to announce the success of the initial research study conducted by Dr. Sam Cheung (Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Baptist University) and Dr. Catherine McBride-Chang (Professor, The Chinese University of Hong Kong) on the effectiveness of the Arcanys Early Learning Foundation parent coaching program. The families who received parent-child coaching had an increase in number sense abilities of 635% in a matter of 2.5 months of training (about 30 individual home visits) in parallel with a 2 hours daycare program, in comparison to an improvement of 90% for the control group of children who were only going to a 2 hours daycare. The improvement was therefore 7 times larger with regular home coaching than without.
The findings will be written up and submitted for publication to an international journal sometime in 2013.
