One of the wonderful advantages of being part of the world of work is the financial freedom to go and do what you want with your free time. And that's exactly what our amazing Recruitment Specialist Normie is up to—traipsing the beautiful meadows of Switzerland, visiting medieval castles in Scotland, and getting lost in the cobbled streets of Bruges, Belgium. Is there any other leisure activity more incredible than traveling to new places? For Normie, she can hardly think of any. Piqued your interest? Read on to know more about her.
How long have you been working at Arcanys? Almost 2 years now.
How were you hired? Oh, I just applied online.
What is your current position? I’m a Recruitment Specialist.
What is your nickname in the office? Just Normie.🙂
Can you tell us about your fave destinations so far? Scotland & Switzerland! Scotland because of its old structures. It sort of makes the old soul in me happy. And Switzerland for its many beautiful natural sceneries… because they please the nature lover in me.
What do you love about traveling? Traveling is a learning experience. You get to be exposed to and learn about new places, experiences, as well as cultures. It also lets you discover new things about yourself that you’re not able to when you are in the comforts of your own hometown/place.
Can you tell us one travel story that left a lasting impression on you? Getting lost in Bruges, Belgium. I was by the marketplace, or maybe it was the square, and I had no phone and no wallet with me. I left my purse with my sister and wandered off by myself. I wanted to explore a bit but wasn’t planning on wandering too far. Then I realized that I couldn’t find my way back to our rendezvous place. And when I looked at the time, I knew that the tour bus was about to go to the next destination, so I started to panic a bit.
Luckily, I was able to find an American couple and was able to gather the courage to approach them and ask if I could use their phone. Thankfully, I was able to contact my sister and ask for directions back to the meeting place. It was scary at that time but it always made me chuckle a bit whenever I think about it now.
What tips can you give to newbie globetrotters? Be open to new experiences. Respect other cultures. And do research about the place before going there.
Describe a typical day at the office. My typical day is that after I log in, I check my emails and respond to applicants. I get tons of those, you’ve no idea! Then, I conduct and schedule interviews and facilitate exams. I make sure to finish as much of my tasks as possible before I have a small break with a nice hot cuppa tea. And then, I process some more applicants, and maybe double-check schedules for the next few days before I log off.
What do you do to beat fatigue or boredom at work? No boredom at all because we're always too busy [chuckles]. For fatigue though, I take short breaks with co-workers, get snacks or have coffee with them.
Tell us something most people at the office may not know about you? I play the guitar and I love to sing... hahaha.
Do you have any memorable/funny office stories or anecdotes since you've started working here at Arcanys? Would you mind sharing it with us? There was one Christmas party that was memorable for me. We had to organize a skit. I had to do some bit of acting in front of a crowd. Papart (a developer at Arcanys) and I played a couple. I haven't done anything like it before so it was something I couldn’t forget.
What do you like most about your job? Having the opportunity to visibly and directly affect a person’s life is what I like the most. Seeing a candidate’s reaction when you deliver them the good news (that they got the job) is really fulfilling.
What do you love about working at Arcanys? I appreciate many things here—the flexi schedule, how the company encourages, promotes, and supports the employees pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and how we can openly express our ideas to each other, even the founders.
If you were an animal, what would you be and why? Maybe a dog... because I love hugs and cuddles.
If there was a quote or motto that best describes your life philosophy, what would it be? Life is short. So go out and see the world. Also, always be kind and always choose to be happy.
Being successful means not only that you find a job that you love and earn money but also that you spend your free time enjoying the fruits of your labor. And we at Arcanys certainly support this ideology. Not surprisingly, Recruitment master Normie certainly has it down pat, don't you think? As the great philosopher, Aristotle once said, "The end of labor is to gain leisure."
